It's been cited as the main cause in dramatic murder-rate reversals in other cities (and its removal is cited when murder rates climb back up, definite cause-effect relationship), although I don't know how the corruption and brutality of NOLA cops changes the scenario.. maybe other places started off with that same bad cop vibe and overcame it.
thoughts?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30407212.post-1168611582698631302007-01-12T09:19:00.000-05:002007-01-12T09:19:00.000-05:00Very upsetting to hear you say "we're losing."Have...Very upsetting to hear you say "we're losing."

Have you seen this? http://squanderedheritage.com/tpapernyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10079530415888863470noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30407212.post-1168498245067603642007-01-11T01:50:00.000-05:002007-01-11T01:50:00.000-05:00Thanks for the comment Darwin, Well said.I am abou...Thanks for the comment Darwin, Well said.
I am about to return from Helen Hill's birthplace of Columbia, SC, having attended her funeral. Anonymous is correct that Helen and her husband Paul touched so many people. Their love crossed the boundaries of race and class. Are we brave enough to follow their example?
Much as I am upset over the loss of my dearest friends, I too am mourning this march towards vengence. The refusal of HANO to reopen public housing, and LSU Health Science Center Health Care Service Division to reopen Charity Hospital are just two structural culprits that make the dispair wrought by years of poverty and racism -- plus Katrina -- much worse.
I support the march. Unfortunately I don't think I will make it back from South Carolina in time. It is important to remember New Orleans' terrible legacy of racism. And be wary of the white community response of eleven years ago, when some in the French Quarter displayed placards that proclaimed "Crime and Noise are Killing the French Quarter". That latter referenced the war against mainly African American street and jazz musicians. It is important to remind ourselves again, "What would Helen and Dinerral do?"
-- Brad OttAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30407212.post-1168496647689086582007-01-11T01:24:00.000-05:002007-01-11T01:24:00.000-05:00I'm certain they were amazing people and it's trag...I'm certain they were amazing people and it's tragic that they were murdered.

I'm not commenting on their individual deaths, however. I'm concerned with the larger politics of crime, violence, race and class.Darwin BondGrahamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08898207904227084144noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30407212.post-1168489481022759572007-01-10T23:24:00.000-05:002007-01-10T23:24:00.000-05:00Dinerral and Helen's death have brought out so man...Dinerral and Helen's death have brought out so many people because they TOUCHED so many people. Not about race....there are few people who when they die, cause friends in far-flung cities to come together.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
